1. Prairie Island Campground
Prairie Island Campground is a beautiful family campground on the banks of the Mississippi River. The campground offers dispersed campsites amongst tranquil glades of trees for those with tents, and comfortable, grassy lots for RVs. There’s plenty of activities to enjoy here, including renting a kayak to explore the river, fishing from the banks, or perhaps a game of disc golf at the campground course.
There are a total of 175 sites at Prairie Island to choose from, of which 107 are hookup sites with access to electricity and water. The rest are dispersed primitive sites without any facilities, however, there are shared water spigots throughout the area for potable water. Other amenities include gear rentals for kayaks, bikes, paddleboards, and equipment, a store for snacks and basic needs, and a boat launch ramp next to the sandy swimming beach, which doesn’t have a lifeguard on duty.
2. Great River Bluffs State Park
Great River Bluffs State Park is the epitome of beautiful Minnesota bluff country. The park is a biodiversity hotspot, with extensive forests of Oak, Hickory, and Maple trees and as well as rolling prairies that are home to grouse, wild turkeys, coyotes, as well as dozens of species of songbird. The park has a series of excellent hiking trails throughout its two Scientific and Natural Areas, offering great views of the Mississippi valley.
There are a total of 42 sites throughout the state park, but how you get to them is up to you! You can choose one of the private, back-in RV sites, which can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet, walk to one of the 4 rustic tent-only sites, or even bike-in to the separate bicycle campground, which isn’t accessible from the day-use area. There are also two wheelchair-accessible sites at the main campsite.
3. Whitewater State Park
The Whitewater river that runs through this picturesque state park is known for its trout fishing, drawing anglers from all around to try their luck. It’s a great spot to come and relax, by the water, away from the busier sites on the Mississippi. The park is also known for its lack of mosquitos, something that will be a relief to many campers. The campsites all have electrical and water hookups, and there’s everything you need for a comfortable stay.
